What is the difference between joint compound and joint mortar?

The terms grout and joint mortar are often used synonymously in the context of tiled stoves. Both describe a material used for permanently sealing and filling joints between stove tiles.

How is the grout mixed?

Depending on the shade, the grout is mixed with water or the recommended mixing liquid. A mixing ratio of approximately 25% water to joint mortar is assumed. For a 2 kg bucket, this equates to approximately 500 ml of water or mixing liquid. The final consistency should be creamy-paste-like, not runny. It is best to start with 400 ml and gradually add the powder until the desired consistency is achieved.

How do I choose the right grout colour?

The colour of the grout is primarily a matter of taste. However, please note the following safety consideration: if your tiles have hairline cracks, dark grout can penetrate these cracks and cause permanent discolouration that cannot be corrected. Therefore, protect such areas before grouting by taping or covering them. As a general rule, it is advisable to choose a grout shade similar to the tile colour in order to visually minimise possible discolouration, for example from cracks or uneven drying.
