Frequently asked questions about joint compound and joint mortar
What is the joint compound used for?
The joint compound is used for grouting tiled stoves and stove tiles. It is suitable for:
- new tiled stoves
- renovations
- repairing cracks
- patching chipped joints
- visual and technical repairs
What is the difference between joint compound and joint mortar?
The terms joint compound and joint mortar are often used synonymously in the field of tiled stoves. Both describe a material for permanently sealing and filling joints between stove tiles.
How is the joint compound mixed?
The joint compound is mixed with water or the recommended mixing liquid depending on the color shade. A mixing ratio of about 25% water to joint mortar is assumed. For a 2 kg bucket, this means about 500 ml of water or mixing liquid. The consistency should be creamy-pasty, not runny. It is best to start with 400 ml and slowly add the powder until the desired consistency is reached.
The mixing liquid serves as a plasticizer additive and improves:
- the color intensity
- the binding of the color pigments
- the abrasion resistance
- the durability of the joint
For dark shades (marked “*A”), the manufacturer explicitly recommends using the mixing liquid.
How long is the joint compound workable?
After mixing, the processing time is about 10 to 15 minutes.
When is the joint mortar fully cured?
The joint compound has a hydraulic setting behavior and reaches its final strength after about 12 hours.
Is the joint compound heat resistant?
Yes, the joint compound is designed for temperatures up to 150 °C and is therefore ideal for the visible area of tiled stoves.
How do I choose the right joint compound color?
The color of the joint compound is primarily a matter of taste. However, please note the following safety criterion: If your tiles have hairline cracks, dark joint compound can penetrate these cracks and cause permanent, irreversible discoloration. Therefore, protect such areas before grouting by taping or covering. In general, a joint compound in a shade similar to the tile color is recommended to visually minimize possible discolorations – for example, due to cracks or uneven drying.
