Collection: Oven Racks - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the use of a grate in a fireplace or stove?

A stove grate (also called a chimney grate ) ensures clean and efficient combustion in the combustion chamber. The integrated slots allow ash to fall into the ash pan below, providing the fire with better airflow from below. This prevents a mountain of ash from forming, which could smother the flame.

This is particularly convenient with a shaking grate : using an external lever, the grate can be easily moved back and forth - the ash falls into the ash drawer without having to open the door.

When does an oven rack need to be replaced?

Fireplace grates are exposed to high temperatures and temperature fluctuations. Over time, the cast iron grate can become warped or cracked. Depending on the intensity of use, a warped or damaged grate should be replaced promptly to maintain stove functionality and safety.

How do I insert the oven rack correctly?

  • The narrow slit openings point upwards.
  • The openings should become wider towards the bottom (conical).
  • An expansion gap of at least 0.5 cm must be maintained around the grate.
  • Make sure that the ash is not accumulated directly under the grate – a good air supply is crucial for efficient combustion.

What to do if there is no suitable oven rack available?

If you can't find a suitable oven grate size, some sizes can be combined: Two smaller grates placed side by side may create the required width. For example, 16 × 28 cm and 20 × 28 cm would create a 36 × 28 cm cast iron grate. If a grate is too large, a brace can be removed with an angle grinder in an emergency – not an ideal solution, but better than shutting down the oven.
