A characteristic feature of sight glass / glass-ceramic panes is their very low expansion under varying temperatures. This is why glass ceramic is used in stoves or fireplaces, as it withstands large temperature differences.

When replacing the sight glass / glass pane on your fireplace, be sure to also replace the corresponding seal. A sealing cord also wears out over time. If it is old and hardened, it can cause the glass to crack.
